How is Gen Z disrupting the traditional learning process?
Generation Z, also known as Gen Z or
iGeneration, are those born between the mid-1990s to the mid-2010s. As a
generation that doesn’t know life without technology, they grew up in an
internet-connected world. Especially when it comes to learning, they turn to
different sources of information than their predecessors. They take that
information and apply it in ways that Gen Xers and Millennials could only have
imagined (at least, when they were students).
Collaborative Learning
To this population, Google, social
media and mobile devices are not just convenient tools — they’re necessary
parts of life. Generation Z anticipates always having access to
information and being online. Gen Z learners value social connections
and are comfortable working in groups. They prefer collaborative learning
environments that enable them to interact with their peers, share ideas, and
receive feedback. This has led to the adoption of social learning platforms and
other collaborative tools in education.
Today’s students refuse to be
passive learners. They aren’t interested in simply showing up for class,
sitting through a lecture, watching just video lectures and taking notes
they’ll memorize for an exam later. Instead, they anticipate being totally
absorbed and actively involved in the learning process. They are embracing
social learning and interactive environment where they want to do things
hands-on. Generation Z wants to take on problems in a fully immersive environment
that enables them to do their own research and simulate to gain a better
understanding, make decisions, and take action. Not only do they find hands-on learning to be more
effective, but Gen Z also says it can help make learning more fun and
interactive.
Personalized
Learning
Gen Z learners prefer a personalized
learning experience tailored to their needs and preferences. They want to learn
at their own pace, in their own way and preferred time. They expect the
learning content to be available on-demand at any time.
Digital
Literacy
Gen
Z learners are
digital natives with a high level of digital literacy. They are adept at using
technology for communication, entertainment, and learning. They prefer
interactive and multimedia-rich content that engages their attention and
enhances their learning experience. They prefer interactive learning
environments and class discussions to the conventional method of disseminating
information.
Demand
for Innovation
Gen Z learners have grown up in a
fast-paced, constantly evolving world, and they expect the same from their
educational experiences. In fact, Gen Z students tend to thrive when
they are given the opportunity to have a fully immersive educational
experience and even enjoy the challenges of being a part of it. They are more
likely to embrace innovative teaching methods, such as gamification, virtual
and augmented reality, and other emerging technologies that make learning more
engaging and interactive.
Generation Z is driving the shift in how
education is delivered. Gen Z is disrupting the traditional learning
process by demanding personalized, mobile, collaborative, and innovative
educational experiences that cater to their digital-savvy and fast-paced
lifestyle. They are a driving force in innovating new
learning tools, teaching styles, and unlimited resource access.
